Team Supporters,
Happy New Year!
Sorry for the long delay in writing back. The team has been extremely busy since the week before Thanksgiving. As I mentioned months ago, the team’s primary focus is on recruiting and training local village police in the districts. Over the past few months we have made significant progress in our province but as you might imagine, this progress has angered and emboldened many locals who actively support one of the many insurgent groups. Over the past two months the team has received reports from the Afghan government that locals were claiming that we (the Team) had committed outrageous atrocities against them. These allegations were all over the place, from abuse to summary executions and not once did the accusers produce any evidence. As I am sure you could imagine, these allegations are taken seriously at all levels and we have been busy detailing our activities, highlighting that many of the accused victims were detained and controlled by Afghan forces and pointing out that the accusers are all anti-coalition or pro-insurgency. Insurgency most definitely involves war by political means.
It hasn’t all been bad news, though. Now that we have successfully dealt with the allegation nonsense we are finally starting to see some real progress in regard to recruiting local police. We are currently finalizing plans to process, train and equip several new classes.
On behalf of the team I would like to thank you for your generous support over the holidays. I think the team received over 30 boxes of treats and snacks that were much appreciated. Over the next week I will be writing as many of you as time permits in order to thank you personally. Currently we are experiencing our 3rd snow fall of the season. We received about 10 inches the day after Thanksgiving, followed by 2 feet a month later on the 27th. Most of the team was lulled in to a false sense of security by the slightly warmer December days but reality has intervened in the form of sub-zero January nights. During the day the sun has been slightly melting the snow on all of the inclines of the camp, which of course, turns in to a slick at night. Having been to Norway on deployment, many of us have prepared for this by wearing ice-trekkers everywhere.
We have a lot of work to do in order to prepare for our upcoming activities so I will close by saying that the team enjoyed the last of the Holiday goodies while watching the BCS National Championship early this morning. If anyone is planning on sending packages in the near future the team preferences remain the same; Chocolate chip cookies, chocolate candy, Regular Cheetos, Ruffles and Wool socks. Many of us southerners were unpleasantly surprised at the effect standard issue; moisture wicking boot socks have on the feet in sub zero weather!
Thank you for your continued support.

ANyMArine,
Here is our update.
Over the past 2 months, our team has settled into a couple of new districts. While our operating location has changed our mailing address is still the same.
The weather has been changing fast here. While the mountain tops are still clear the temperature has been dropping to the high 40's at night. We have been trying to enjoy the weather during the day but it has become necessary to pack a warming layer if we are out and about at night. Last week I felt as if I were going to freeze in the back of one of our HMMWVs as I didn't bring a fleece.
The team would like say thanks for all of the support you guys have sent us over the past 6months. Nov 1st marks our halfway point for this deployment. The snacks were tasty and I've noticed what appears to be a white "film" on the keyboards of the computers next to where the snack pantry is. LOL. I even managed to get my hands on some of the cookies this time. Fairly certain that crispy chocolate chip cookies are the preferred snack of the team. The team also likes M&Ms, whopper candies and flavored chips of all types. Also those "shoe-string" potatoes that come in cans, french's onion strings, cheetos, etc. They also like the MIO water enhancers. On the MIO front, they love the orange, fruit punch and MIO Black Cherry energy flavors. The green thunder not so much, lol. Apparently it has a "wang" to it and not even the afghan interpreters will touch it. Those guys usually like everything. Green tea and rice k We certainly appreciate the boxes of snacks as the food has been pretty bad here lately.
Also, decaf coffee is a big hit with the Colonel.
Thank you for your continued support.

Supporters,
Thank you for the letters, cards from the kids, snacks, coffee, chips and cookies. Regret the lack of response for awhile as we have been in the field for awhile due to the Muslim holiday of Ramadan. We are currently shifting one part of the team to a different location so that has taken up most of our time in the past month. It’s September so most of the team is pretty excited as it means they are 1/3d of the way done with their deployment.
Most of the regular military units are downsizing or leaving our area of operations all together. We are anticipating the expansion of our team with new members along with an expanded number of sites where we will train and advise local units. As you can imagine, we are jumping through hoops to get all of the planning and preparation done ahead of time.
The weather has suddenly cooled off quite a bit and thankfully it hasn’t been too bad anyway. The clouds have started to surround the mountains around us, bringing on the fall rains. We are at 7500ft so we have had a much cooler time than down south. I have heard that we will pay for that when winter comes as it apparently gets “Korea” cold here.
Several of you have inquired about cold weather items or other food stuffs that the team might enjoy. The team is still pretty big on chocolate chip cookies, cheetos, and flavored chips in general. New items such as M&Ms, Combos, chocolate-almond bars, Maple & Brown Sugar instant oatmeal packets and we even have 1 request for decaf coffee. Apparently I have a Marine that doesn’t do caffeine. I know, suspect.
On the hygiene item front we are good till 2014. Seriously, your generosity has resulted in a stock pile that could rival Walgreens. Some of the team has joked about setting up the first CVS in Afghanistan.
Thanks for your time and support.

Greetings from Eastern Afghanistan! First off I would like to thank the generous support we have received from many of you! The team is currently in the middle of the Afghan fighting season before Ramadan so I apologize if you haven't yet received a note of thanks from us.
The team is settling in to an operational groove and suffice to say things have been busy in our little slice of heaven.
Many of you heard us when we requested hygiene items, coffee cups and letters and I am happy to say that we are good on hygiene and breath mints items till 2015. Haha.
As I promised the snacks you guys sent lived very short lives out here. Polling the team the favorites still stand as potato chips, Pringles, Both reg and Chocolate rice krispy treats, oatmeal chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookies, pretty much any snack will still do. Also, the team has developed an affliction for this Mio Energy water enhancer....both flavors. Shocker, anything with caffeine.
Next time I get a chance I will try to take some photos for upload that might make it through the military security system. Till then, thank you for your thoughts and continued support.

Greetings from the "Stan! Looking to show your support to a small number of Marines living in remote districts of some dusty Afghan province? Well, your search has ended.....
My team (made up of several Marine units from NC to DC) is part of a task force that works and lives with afghan security forces throughout our province. Living conditions are spartan but we at least have a field mess available for food. Most of the team members live in Qalats (think adobe buildings with a wall around them) and have access to generators with 220 and 110 power. We do not have access to a PX or store at any of the team locations. Showers are irregular at most team sites. They do however, have camp showers. I have polled the team memebers to get consensus on the type of things needed.
Snacks, lots of snacks. The team loves cookies (oatmeal chocolate chip was most popular) but im sure any chocolate chip or oatmeal or girl scout cookies will live a short life with the team. Any type of brownies, rice crispy treats, chocolate rice crispy treats, pringles, doritios, payday candy bars, peanut brittle, beef jerkey, any jerkey, in short, if it is bad for you they will welcome and devour it.
As there isn't any PX or store access, the team would appreciate any sugar-free gum, breath mints, baby wipes, face wipes like stridex, coffee mugs with good locking lids and stainless interiors, mouth wash, flouride rinse, mechanical pencils, dog tag silencers, chap stick and Progenex protein powder. I'm sure you are shocked to hear that most of us are gym rats. Top supplement needs are progenex protein, HMB recovery supplement without sugar and electrolyte pills.
The Marines also enjoy receiving letters, post cards and pretty much any sort of mail. Don't hesitate to write!
Thanks for your thoughts and support.
